DEGREE OF OFFENSE

A, B, C, etc. Class A = Highest level of offense.
1, 2, 3, etc. 1st Degree = Highest level of offense.

Tips on Reading Reports:

• The Disposition and/or Charge Status is the most crucial information when making a hiring decision. It indicates the severity of the offense (Felony, Misdemeanor, etc.) and the final court ruling (Convicted, Dismissed, etc.). If a charge was Dismissed (DS), it means the subject was not legally charged with the crime.

• The classification of offenses varies by jurisdiction and state in the United States. Generally, states use a letter-based system (A, B, C, etc.) or a number-based system (1, 2, 3, etc.) to classify the severity of felonies and misdemeanors (where Class A and 1st Degree equate to the highest level of offense). It is important to note that the classification system and the range of classes can vary significantly between states. It is recommended to consult the specific laws and statutes of the state in question to determine the exact range and classification of offenses.

• If there is no Disposition and Charge Status, then the case is open and ongoing, and the subject should be considered innocent until proven guilty.

• If the title of the offense is UNSPECIFIED, it may mean that the case is still open and ongoing, with no further information available to the public at this time. This could also mean the record is tied to a motor vehicle infraction, a non-criminal matter, or a juvenile record, and the courthouse has used UNSPECIFIED as a way of concealing information that is not pertinent or available to the public. We include these records in our instant data as they may be helpful in directing you to a specific state or county where you might want to conduct further or more thorough research.

• Some states (e.g., Oregon) heavily rely on abbreviations in their reports. When interpreting criminal abbreviations, please ensure that you do not confuse the ‘CI’ for Case Status with the ‘CI’ for Case Type. A Case Status of ‘CI’ means ‘Closed/Inactive,’ and you will see this on many reports. A Case Type of ‘CI’ means ‘Citation.’
